AWARD AMOUNT:

$6,075*

PURPOSE: The Puerto Rico Department of Justice will use grant funds to conduct a one-day training conference tailored for prosecutors handling substance abuse cases. The main objective of this statewide evaluation is to improve the knowledge, skills, abilities, and conceptual understanding of prosecutors operating in Puerto Rico's drug courts. The conference will include topics such as the Controlled Substance Abuse Laws of Puerto Rico, addiction issues, eligibility and admission regulations, screening, sanctions, incentives, and basic concepts and philosophies of the drug court movement. The Drug Court Program in Puerto Rico has established 6 courts to date in collaboration with various government agencies, such as the Administrative Office of the Courts, Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration, Correction Administration, Legal Assistance Society, and the police department.
