"a/Estimates for time served in prison are based on the assumption that someone sentenced in a particular year would serve the fraction of the imposed sentence found among prisoners released that year. 2003 data were used to estimate time served in prison in 2004. Percentages are based on data from 269,652 persons released from State prisons in 2003 (National Corrections Reporting Program, 2003 tables 2-8 and 2-12).  These percentages included credited jail time."
