Shopping Malls: Are They Prepared to Prevent and Respond to Attack?

Recent events have brought home, once again, what security experts have known for decades: malls are vulnerable to attack. This “NIJ Journal” article discusses a study on the operational and emergency response procedures of U.S. retail malls. Surveying state homeland security advisors and mall security directors, researchers found significant gaps in the ability of malls to prevent and respond to emergency situations—whether a terrorist attack, mass shooting or other violent act, or natural disaster.
