On May 27, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, in recognition of National Missing Children’s Day, OVC will offer a Web Forum Guest Host Session on Assisting Family Members of Missing Children hosted by Duane Bowers, LPC, training consultant for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Abby Potash, Program Manager of Team HOPE (Help Offering Parents Empowerment). National Crime Victims' Rights Week was held April 13–19, 2008, following the National Observance and Candlelight Ceremony on April 1 and the Attorney General's Crime Victims' Service Awards Ceremony on April 11. The Attorney General honored victim survivors and advocates during the events and delivered remarks in appreciation of their efforts. The OVC Director also spoke at the event; read the Director's remarks at the Awards Ceremony. OVC announces the 2008 NCVRW Award Recipients. Join us in congratulating this year's recipients, who were honored at the awards ceremony on April 11, 2008. OVC also presents a Web Forum discussion on Implementing Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Programs, offered in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. April 2008 OVC is now accepting applications for the National Victim Assistance Academy. January 2008 On January 30, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, OVC will host a Web Forum Guest Host Session on best practices for developing relationships between victim service providers and the media with Greg Luft and Anne Seymour, contributors to OVC's video, "The News Media's Coverage of Crime and Victimization". Awards of $50,000 to $500,000 are available through the FY 2008 National Field-Generated Training, Technical Assistance, and Demonstration Projects grant to provide services and support to crime victims or to ensure that victims are afforded the rights to which they are due. Applications under “National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims” are due February 21, 2008. All others are due May 29, 2008. One cooperative agreement of $225,000 will be awarded to a private nonprofit organization or public agency to develop the 2009 NCVRW Resource Guide, which is used by the victims' field to heighten awareness of crime victim issues. Apply by January 22, 2008. On January 9, 2008, Michelle Garcia, Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime Stalking Resource Center, hosted an OVC Web Forum Guest Host Session on best practices for serving victims of intimate partner stalking. If you missed the discussion, you can view it online now. OVC has released the 2008 Resource Guide for National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 13–19, 2008. Developed to help communities promote awareness of victim issues, this online guide includes camera-ready art files, public awareness posters, the 2008 theme DVD and screensaver, and more. January 11, 2008, will mark the first observance of a National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness. The annual observance is intended to enhance the fight against human trafficking and was established by a U.S. Senate-approved resolution cosponsored by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), John Cornyn (R-TX), Barack Obama (D-IL), and Dick Lugar (R-IN). Three grants of up to $125,000 will be awarded to individuals through the 2008 Victim Assistance Fellowship Program to address gaps in services for crime victims by developing training, technical assistance, and public awareness resources for practitioners who serve victims of crime. Apply by January 10, 2008. On January 9, 2008, at 2 pm (ET), join OVC and OVW for a Web Forum Guest Host Session with Michelle Garcia, Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime Stalking Resource Center, on best practices for serving victims of intimate partner stalking. December 2007 OVC announces the release of a new publication entitled Helping Sexual Assault Survivors with Multiple Victimizations and Needs: A Guide for Agencies Serving Sexual Assault Survivors, developed under an OVC grant by the University of Iowa, School of Social Work. On November 8, 2007, Carroll Ann Ellis, Director of the Victim Services Division of the Fairfax County Police Department, hosted an OVC Web Forum Guest Host Session on best practices for working with survivors of homicide and other traumatic events. Check out this new service from OVC and make your nomination by October 19, 2007. Through a grant from OVC , the National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators (NAVAA) will support states and local communities with funds to conduct public awareness initiatives during National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 13-19, 2008. August 2007 OVC Director Gillis copresented the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) Crime Victim Services award during a plenary session of the NSA's annual conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, in June 2007. The Pinal County (AZ) Sheriff's Office received the 2007 award, which recognizes "outstanding achievement by a Sheriff's Office in support of victims and victim assistance." Through funding from OVC, the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services (FRIS) has worked to meet the needs of rural victims by effectively implementing a mobile SANE program. FRIS has developed this replication guide, Implementing SANE Programs in Rural Communities: The West Virginia Regional Mobile SANE Project (NCJ 221749), to assist rural communities working to better meet the needs of victims. In observance of the 3rd annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15, 2008) and the need to address the issue of elder abuse, OVC will hold a Web Forum to discuss neglect, maltreatment and mistreatment in later life. Each year the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) leads the Nation in commemorating National Police Week, which will be observed this year from May 11–17. Join NLEOMF on May 13 for the 20th Annual Candlelight Vigil in Washington, D.C., to honor the sacrifices made by our nation's law enforcement. OVC also recognizes the critical role of law enforcement in responding to victims of crime. April 2008 To coincide with National Crime Victims' Rights Week, OVC has released several new products and publications to help advance victim services and raise awareness of victim issues nationwide. Released by OVC for National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 13–19, 2008, the guide is designed to help communities promote awareness of crime victim issues. Included in the online guide are a set of Web banners that can be used to promote public awareness of victims' rights and issues. Victims' Rights Resources With funding from OVC, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) has developed resources, primarily for state legislators, but also useful for victim advocates, criminal justice practitioners, and other allied professionals. These NCSL resources on victims' rights and services include an audio CD providing an overview of victims’ rights and services and an online guide to victims' rights laws in the states. National Youth Violence Prevention Week will be observed March 31-April 4, 2008, to raise awareness of effective ways to prevent and reduce youth violence. OVC offers several resources on school and community issues, which provide information to help students cope with violence and address underlying causes of conflict. If you are interested in training on issues involving youth violence, register for OVC TTAC's workshop on Supporting Children Living with Grief and Trauma: A Multidisciplinary Approach. In observance of National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week (February 4-8), OVC is offering a Web Forum on best practices for working with teen victims of dating violence. OVC also offers links to related organizations that assist teen dating violence victims, service providers, and allied professionals. You can learn more about this issue from the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) Teen Victim Project, which recently launched a new Web training series. January 2008 This January marks the fifth annual National Stalking Awareness Month, and in recognition of this serious and deadly crime, OVC is offering a Web Forum session to discuss how to help the more than 1 million women and nearly 400,000 men who become the victims of stalking in America each year. OVC also offers relevant publications and links to related organizations to assist stalking victims, service providers, and allied professionals. Fight Against Human Trafficking (January 2008) The National Human Trafficking Resource Center, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, offers information and resources to victims of human trafficking and accepts tips from individuals about possible victims via their hotline 1-888-3737-888. Additional help for those affected by human trafficking is provided by OVC with its support to Grantee programs assisting victims of human trafficking. December 2007 In recognition of National Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Month, OVC invites you to view past Web Forum discussions on Serving Victims of Impaired Driving and Drunk Driving. OVC also offers resource links on drunk driving and related publications, including "Drunk Driving Victimization," from the OVC Help Series. You Can Get Through the Holidays The anticipation of enduring a holiday without a friend or family member can be harder than the actual holiday itself. Coping With the Holidays, an OVC Web resource, has suggestions from survivors for getting through the holidays. November 2007 View images from the first-ever National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, held on September 25, 2007, in Capitol Hill. The photos capture the Murder Wall and other key moments from this inaugural event, which honors the memories of homicide victims and supports bereaved families and friends. Do you know someone who has worked to improve the lives of crime victims? If you do, you can nominate them for an award: The National Crime Victims' Service award. To ensure that outstanding service providers are given the recognition they deserve, submit your nominations before October 19, 2007. With OVC 's new streamlined application process, you can submit your nomination online. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) presents http://www.enditnow.gov. This online tool contains information and resources for both victims and those seeking to help them. All content, including a public service announcement, are available in both English and Spanish language versions. The Office for Victims of Crime also offers relevant publications and a Web Forum discussion on domestic violence to assist service providers and allied professionals. September 2007 A National Day of Remembrance for murder victims will be held on September 25, 2007. Sponsored by the National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children, Inc. and the National Center for Victims of Crime, with support from OVC, a ceremony on Capitol Hill will honor the lives of homicide victims, provide support to bereaved families and friends, and showcase the Murder Wall. OVC's survivor resources and publications offer additional resources to victim service providers, survivors of homicide victims, and covictims. The aim of National Campus Safety Awareness Month is to raise public awareness on the issue of campus safety, and to promote safer, more secure college and university campuses nationwide. OVC's publications on campus crime and safety, the Office of Justice Program's Safer Schools resources Web page, and the National Criminal Justice Reference Service's annotated list of campus safety resources are valuable resources for victims and victim service providers alike. July 2007 OVC, through the Helping Outreach Program to Expand (HOPE) grant program, provides funding to community-based grassroots organizations to support program development activities and to improve outreach and services to victims of crime. Read the HOPE brochure to learn more. Additionally, grassroots organizations can access scholarships for continued education through OVC's Training and Technical Assistance Center.
