The importance of jails and their neglect by social scientists are paradoxical themes in the literature on local jails.
Abstract
This study reviews the literature, especially the work of several researchers who have attempted to explore the theoretical dimension, and draws the conclusion that there is a need for a general model or a "metaphor" in research on jails. The sociological analyses of John Irwin and the social psychological analyses of John J. Gibbs are seen as steps in that direction. Both authors have suggested that focusing on the functions of the jail in the community is valuable in offering a general context. This study goes on to use the community context in reviews of existing studies on the role of the jail, the experience of jail confinement, change and reform in jails, and crowding and the future of the American jails. 1 table and approximately 115 references.
