In 2014, the National Law Enforcement Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) celebrated its 20th anniversary, and this 2014 Annual Report notes that although NLECTC has reorganized its system and its component centers over those years, its overarching mission continues to be to serve as a conduit between researchers and criminal justice professionals in promoting the development and transfer of technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
Abstract
This report describes the activities of the various NLECTC components. This includes the work of the National Center, which shares the findings of technological research sponsored by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and its relevance for various criminal justice fields. Another section of the report focuses on the Law Enforcement Technology Aviation Program/Small, Rural, Tribal, and Border Regional Center. It reports on air support as an aid in drug and attempted-burglary investigations. The report on the activities of the Forensics Technology Center of Excellence focuses on flexible training in forensics fields and how forensic specialists are doing more of their work in the field instead of the lab. The section on the activities of the Sensor, Surveillance, and Biometrics Technology Center of Excellence reports on the future of body-worn chromosphere for law enforcement officers. The Weapons and Protective Systems Technologies Center of Excellence reports on the testing of the PIT Maneuver Project, which is nearing completion. The PIT Maneuver is a dangerous tactic by law enforcement officers in which a pursuing vehicle engages the rear corner of a fleeing vehicle to cause it to spin, resulting in the controlled termination of a pursuit. Other NLECTC activities reported pertain to standards and testing, school safety, outreach, and corrections technology
