This fact sheet summarizes information on "Comprehensive Tribal Justice Systems Strategic Planning," which is one of nine "Purpose Areas" for grant funding related to tribal justice issues under the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ's) Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) initiative, which unifies all tribal justice DOJ grants under nine Purpose Areas.
Abstract
Under the Comprehensive Tribal Justice Systems Strategic Planning Purpose Area, the DOJ supports with funding and technical assistance tribes' development of a comprehensive tribal justice system strategic plan. In fiscal year (FY) 2013, a new cohort of grantees was funded, and the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) joined DOJ's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in administering grants and other resources under this Purpose Area. In FY2014, the DOJ's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) also joined the effort in providing funding under this Purpose Area. Resources provided to tribes through this Purpose Area will enable them to develop a data-informed, comprehensive justice system strategic plan. Through the three-phase planning process, grantees conduct a needs assessment to gain a comprehensive understanding of the needs and resources across all departments within their justice systems, even across jurisdictions. Tribes are also reporting increased collaboration with non-tribal agencies in areas of law enforcement, courts, domestic violence shelters and advocacy, as well as treatment services. The activities under each of the three phases are described in this report. It also lists current grantees under this Purpose Area for each fiscal year 2012-2016. An overview is provided for each of the five DOJ funding agencies involved in this Purpose Area.
