This study was a preliminary cross-cultural analysis of wifebeating using data from ethnographies written by women who used women as primary informants.
Abstract
Variables reported to be related to frequency and severity of wife beating were identified from previous cross-cultural research and theoretical models. Data from eleven ethnographies meeting the female orientation criteria and representing a variety of cultures were examined for relationships between the identified variables and frequency and severity of wifebeating. Relationships predicted from crosscultural research and/or existing theoretical models generally were not found in this analysis. However, patterns which hold promise for future research with a wider sampling of female oriented ethnographies were identified. (Author abstract)
