Provisional data on cautions, court proceedings, and sentencing in England during 1990 indicate that 1.94 million defendants appeared in magistrate courts, 4 percent more than in 1989.
Abstract
Increases were noted in the numbers prosecuted for indictable offenses (up 5 percent), summary nonmotoring (up 4 percent), and summary motoring (up 3 percent). There was a 7-percent rise in the number of offenders found guilty or cautioned for indictable offenses. This increase, however, reflected a 22-percent rise in the number cautioned, while the number found guilty by the courts did not change. The number of offenders sentenced to immediate custody fell by 16 percent to 54,100 in 1990. Juveniles aged 14 to 16 years sentenced to custody decreased from 2,400 in 1989 to 1,600 in 1990 (down 33 percent); young adults aged 17 to 20 years decreased from 16,700 to 13,300 (down 20 percent); and adults decreased from 45,000 to 39,200 (down 13 percent). The use of immediate custody by all courts for indictable offenses declined from 16 percent in 1989 to 13.6 percent in 1990, while that for probation rose from 9.5 to 10.3 percent and that for community service rose from 7 to 7.8 percent. 3 references, 6 notes, 10 tables, and 5 figures
