Intended for judges and other professionals, this booklet reviews the child sexual abuse problem and discusses its detection, intervention, interviewing, victim protection, court procedures, and sentencing and dispositions.
Abstract
A review of the problem focuses on types of abusers and abuse as well as on the extent and nature of child sexual abuse. A discussion of child sexual abuse detection addresses reporting procedures and managing such reports. Intervention procedures are reviewed, notably the options of punishment, treatment, and effective prevention. A multidisciplinary team assessment is suggested, as are procedures for testing a report's credibility. A discussion of options for incest victim protection focuses on removal from the home, placement, temporary protective orders, interim counseling, and the use of a child's advocate. An overview of court procedures is provided, as is a consideration of the goals and responsibilities of sentencing and dispositions, treatment, and civil actions. Appendixes present the Kent County, Mich., sexual abuse treatment program and the Minnesota Child Hearsay Act. 20 notes.
