This paper discusses the alcohol and drug assessment and education program conducted in a small rural North Carolina juvenile detention center.
Abstract
Components of the program include a psychosocial evaluation with an emphasis on substance abuse, invitro urine drug screening, drug education, the tracking of the juvenile's treatment following release from detention, and inservice training for the staff in the areas of physical and mental health as well as substance abuse. Evaluations consisted of two computerized assessment tools and a clinical interview. The assessment tools used are the Juvenile Automated Substance Abuse Evaluation (JASAE) and the Achenbach Youth Self Report (AYSR). The JASAE is a 102-question assessment designed to report mood-altering drug use. The AYSR investigates social skills, aggression, delinquency, somatic problems, self-destructive characteristics, identity problems, and emotional disturbances. The clinical interview is designed to identify needs and to make recommendations to the court on behalf of the juvenile regarding physical and mental health care and substance abuse. The drug education program consists of a computerized learning lab supplemented with movies, games, and group discussions. 8 references
