The Scottish Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders joined with England's National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders in organizing an international seminar on crime and social policy.
Abstract
Held in Edinburgh in 1991, the seminar involved 30 experts in various fields of criminology and social policy from the United States, Canada, and Europe. The seminar focused on approaches to social crime prevention within the context of social policy. The debate addressed common themes and innovative developments, and participants looked at various practical ways to promote a social policy perspective in crime prevention. A comparative approach was adopted, and the seminar examined ways in which social crime prevention measures could be developed within different national and social settings. In order to facilitate this approach, several major areas of social policy were addressed in relation to crime: income, employment, family assistance, preschool facilities, education, juvenile provision, and equal treatment for migrant communities. Seminar participants assessed the extent to which national and local governments are addressing crime and developing relevant crime prevention strategies. They were also asked to consider key ways in which social policy can be developed to promote social crime prevention. Seminar participants concluded that principles of social justice are vital in the development of any model purporting to address crime from a social policy perspective. References, tables, and figures
