Abstract
This report focuses on crimes committed in 1989 and reviews trends in criminal statistics between 1976 and 1989. In 1989, there was a small increase over the previous year in the number of serious crimes reported to police. The most frequent offenses were property crimes (more than 73 percent), forgery, and malicious injuries to property. The median age of offenders convicted of serious crimes was 27 years; only 6 percent of adult offenders were women. Foreign offenders mainly committed property offenses, drug law violations, and forgery. There was an increase of nearly 17 percent in the number of juveniles involved in all groups of offenses. Most convictions were for motoring and regulatory offenses; fines were imposed in 97 percent of convictions. Of the 408 inmates admitted to Cypriot prisons in 1989, 254 were convicted of criminal offenses, while the remainder were military convicts or noncriminal prisoners.
