Techniques and technologies that have been added to the use of Breathalyzers to address drunk driving include sobriety checkpoints, the use of horizontal gaze testing and other techniques to test for sobriety, immediate license suspension, and the impoundment of cars or license plates.
Abstract
Other strategies include allowing convicted offenders to drive to and from work only and requiring them to wear a monitoring device, the use of ignition interlock devices, police crackdowns on merchants who sell alcohol to minors, and passive alcohol detectors. Other factors that have helped reduce the number of drunk drivers include the lowering of the blood alcohol level used to define driving under the influence, raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 21, cessation of the availability of alcohol at sporting events after a certain point, and voluntary programs such as the designated driver program. Citizen activist groups and other efforts have also raised public awareness of the problem. In addition, efforts to train drug recognition experts have increased.
