This manual guides instructors in administering course exercises for police defensive driving, specialized maneuvers, and pursuit driving.
Abstract
The defensive driving courses test driver abilities to negotiate various courses marked by cones. Driving abilities tested are accurate 's' turns followed by straight driving, turn around maneuver, parallel parking, and backing up. For each exercise, the instructor is given information on instructions to the student, the exercise and scoring procedure, evaluation, driving techniques to be demonstrated, and a course diagram. Courses for specialized maneuvers include a 'serpentine' course of continuing right and left partial turns through a series of straight-line cones and a reaction course that tests drivers' abilities to respond to traffic lights and verbal commands via radio. The pursuit exercise involves the student in the initiation of contact with and subsequent pursuit of a traffic violator, played by the instructor. The exercise ends when the traffic stop is completed or the pursuit is terminated by one of the instructors. The instructor is guided in the scoring of overall performance for all of the courses. Appended evaluation criteria and a student workbook.
