A seven-point approach is proposed to facilitate court access standards becoming consistent with the intent of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Trial Court Performance Standard on Access.
Abstract
Steps to the seven-point approach, which draws on the experience of one major urban trial court, include: obtain information, assemble a team, integrate the concept into every facet of basic and routine management of the court, survey the court building, develop a plan, network with the people in the community who have an interest in ensuring that the court is accessible, and take the first step toward increasing accessibility. Integrating and translating the concept of access into general management and proactive networking emerge as the most valuable steps. Examples are cited of the efforts of the superior court in Essex County to increase court access.
