This report from Missouri's Criminal Justice Information Services Division presents information on hate crimes in the State reported to law enforcement agencies in 2010.
Abstract
Major findings from this report include the following: in 2010, a total of 126 hate crimes were reported to law enforcement, an increase of 28.5 percent from 2009 and 2008 levels; 31 law enforcement agencies across the State reported at least 1hate crime incident; the reported hate crimes included 155 victims and 157 known offenders; and 90.4 percent of hate crimes were committed against individuals, with the most frequently reported offense being intimidation (28.5 percent), followed by property damage/vandalism (24.6 percent), and simple assault (23 percent). The evaluation also found that the most frequent location where hate crimes were committed was a residence (35 percent), on a highway/road/alley/street (20 percent), or at a school/college (13 percent); the most frequently reported bias motivations were race (65.8 percent) and sexual orientation (18.2 percent); and Anti-Black was the bias motivation reported in 64.7 percent of all anti-racial hate crimes, with Anti-Male Homosexuality reported in 52.1 percent of all anti-sexual orientation hate crimes.
