To address security risks involving individual patients or the hospital staff or facilities, the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii has developed a special case management plan that promotes communication and teamwork and that focuses on crisis intervention, risk management, and action.
Abstract
The plan is a systematic, coordinated, written statement that states the problem, assesses the level of risk and potential for violence, and provides an outline to help the involved personnel decide what to do in a given circumstance. The plan becomes a permanent part of the patient's medical record unless the patient is not the focus of the problem. The hospital's security managers and Department of Social Services worked together closely to develop the plan. Previously, security had been used only to defuse a potentially dangerous situation before it went out of control. However, security's role has expanded, and now the staff is directly involved with patient care. Case examples are listed.
