This description of New York State inmate educational programs, as of the fall of 1984, encompasses the four major program areas: academic education, vocational training, special subjects, and self-development.
Abstract
The overall goal of the educational programs is to provide every inmate with the opportunity to obtain the credentials, skills, and attitudes needed to function competently upon returning to the community. The academic education program consists of a core academic program (adult basic education, pre-high school equivalency, and high school equivalency), a remedial education program, and supplementary academic programs (learning laboratory, evening education program, commercial subjects, bilingual programs, precollege, volunteer tutoring, cell study, and a peer counseling program). The inmate college program provides inmates who have a high school diploma with the opportunity to earn a college degree or a 1-year certificate in a specialty area. The occupational training program consists of 35 trade areas which operate within the guidelines of a standardized curriculum composed of job-related tasks commensurate with entry-level proficiency. The special subjects program provides opportunities for inmates to develop their talents and skills in art and music and expand avocational interests. Self-development programs include education counseling services, library services, and bilingual education. Appendixes contain standards, program sites, general information, and tables.
