Intended for use by police during criminal investigations, this pocket guide presents in outline form the diagnostic system used by the FBI to standardize the terminology and formally classify the critical characteristics of each subtype of the three major violent crimes: murder, arson, and sexual assault.
Abstract
The classification system is the result of nearly a decade of study of murderers, rapists, child molesters, abductors, and arsonists at the FBI's National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime in Quantico, Va. For each crime, the manual lists the defining characteristics, common crime scene indicators, common forensic findings, factors to consider during the investigation, and suggestions for the search warrant. For the complete volume, which details the classification system and gives advice on many other aspects of criminal investigations, see NCJ-137386. Index
