A brief history of the shotgun is followed by a description of the unique features of the shotgun and the danger of using one without proper training. A discussion of the criminal's attitude toward using weapons precedes advice to officers on how to approach potentially dangerous situations. Each brand of shotgun is described under the following general categories: pump action, autoloading, break action, and special shotguns. The manual also describes various shotgun accessories. Various types and brands of ammunition are briefly described, followed by instructions on loading and unloading the shotgun. The manual advises officers on carrying, shooting, and managing the shotgun in various combat situations. Improving shooting skill and handling malfunctions are considered. Instruction also covers how to retain possession of the shotgun when an opponent is attempting to grab it in particular circumstances. Discussions of alternative uses of the shotgun cover launching grenades, chemical agent shells, and chemical agents. Following a description of the care and maintenance of the shotgun, instructors are advised on shotgun training. 25-item resource list.
