Abstract
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO SIX UNITS: ORGANIZATION AND OPERATION OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS, BASIC ELEMENTS AND ISSUES IN ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE, PREVENTIVE PATROL TECHNIQUES, INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES, TRAFFIC DIRECTION AND CONTROL, AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION AND CONTROL. EACH UNIT CONTAINS SUGGESTIONS FOR COURSE CONTENT, LISTS TEACHING MATERIALS INCLUDING FILMS AND PAMPHLETS, SUGGESTS STUDENT ACTIVITIES, AND DEFINES INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS PRETESTS AND POSTTESTS FOR EACH UNIT. THE SIX DIVISIONS ARE DESIGNED AS A TOTAL COURSE OF STUDY. HOWEVER, EACH CONTAINS ENOUGH MATERIAL TO EXPAND IT INTO AN INSERVICE TRAINING COURSE OR A SPECIAL PURPOSE TRAINING COURSE. THE FIRST UNIT FOCUSES ON THE GENERAL ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF A TYPICAL POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE WORK, THE DUTIES OF VARIOUS DIVISIONS, AND THE HUMAN ELEMENT IN POLICE WORK. THE SECOND UNIT EXAMINES THE VARIOUS PARTS OF THE JUSTICE SYSTEM; DISCUSSES THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS AMONG POLICE, VARIOUS COURT LEVELS, AND PENAL INSTITUTIONS; AND PRESENTS SOME ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE. THE UNIT ON PREVENTIVE PATROL TECHNIQUES COVERS VARIOUS TYPES OF PREVENTIVE PATROL STRATEGY, FIELD INTERROGATION, ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION, CRIME INVESTIGATION, FOOT PATROL, MOTOR PATROL, AND ANIMAL PATROL. THE UNIT ON INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES LIKEWISE COVERS PRACTICAL PROBLEMS. TRAFFIC DIRECTION AND CONTROL COVERS NOT ONLY THE SAFETY OF THE POLICE OFFICER DURING ROUTINE TRAFFIC DUTY BUT ALSO ARRESTS, APPROACHING SUSPICIOUS VEHICLES, INVESTIGATIONS OF VIOLATIONS, AND ROUTINE ASSISTANCE TO MOTORISTS. THE CHAPTER ON DELINQUENCE COVERS HOME BACKGROUNDS, THE ROLE OF THE POLICE IN THE PREVENTION OF DELINQUENCY, WORKING WITH OTHER AGENCIES, SPECIAL LAWS RELATING TO JUVENILES, AND THE PROBLEMS OF GANGS. ALL OF THE UNITS SUGGEST A VARIETY OF FILMS, OUTSIDE SPEAKERS, PRACTICAL EXERCISES, AND ROLE-PLAYING ACTIVITIES FOR THE STUDENTS. AN APPENDIX LISTS SUPPLIERS OF RESOURCES MENTIONED. (GLR)
