A TRAINING AID FOR THE SECURITY MANAGER WHO WISHES TO INSTRUCT SECURITY OFFICERS IN PROPER PATROL PROCEDURES IS PROVIDED IN A SLIDE AND CASSETTE PROGRAM WHICH EMPHASIZES THE PROTECTION OF PERSONS AND PROPERTY.
Abstract
PROTECTION OF PERSONS INCLUDES CONTROL OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL ACTS OF POTENTIAL HARM TO PEOPLE. THE PROTECTION OF PROPERTY INVOLVES GUARDING AGAINST THEFT, DAMAGE, OR UNAUTHORIZED USE. THE MOST IMPORTANT PROTECTION MEASURE IS DETECTION BEFORE THE CRIME HAPPENS. PRIVATE POLICE OFFICERS ARE ADVISED TO BE ON TIME AND FOLLOW SET PROCEDURES SO THAT OFFICIALS WILL KNOW WHERE EACH GUARD IS AT ANY TIME. THE GUARD MUST ALSO CHECK THE LOG TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY SUSPICIOUS THINGS NOTED BY THE GUARD WHO WAS PREVIOUSLY ON DUTY. ANYTHING UNUSUAL SHOULD BE WRITTEN DOWN. PROPER EQUIPMENT INCLUDES A PEN, NOTEBOOK, LIST OF PHONE NUMBERS, FLASHLIGHT, AND RADIO EQUIPMENT. GOOD PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED TO HELP GUARDS PERFORM THEIR DUTIES. ORGANIZATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THESE. THE GUARD MUST KNOW THE FACILITY, ITS ENTRANCES AND EXITS, THE LOCATION OF FIRE EQUIPMENT, THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OFFICES AND MANUFACTURING AREAS, AND HOW STREETS AND ROADS IN THE AREA PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE FACILITY. GUARDS ARE URGED TO BE THOROUGH IN EACH OF THEIR ROUNDS -- ANYTHING THAT HAS CHANGED SHOULD BE NOTED, ALONG WITH ANY DANGERS OR HAZARDS WHICH SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE EMPLOYER. WHEN ON OUTSIDE PATROL, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE GUARD WALK 20 FEET FROM THE WALLS. THIS WILL REDUCE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ATTACK. THE ROUTINE PATROL SHOULD NOT BE REGULAR. IT SHOULD BE VARIED SO THAT THE GUARD CAN DOUBLE BACK TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER IF ANYTHING LOOKS SUSPICIOUS. THE SAME SUGGESTIONS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED FOR MOBILE PATROLS. SECURITY GUARDS MUST REMEMBER THAT THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE A DUTY TO PREVENT THE LOSS OF ASSETS. AN INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE IS INCLUDED WITH THIS AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAM, PROVIDING DIRECTIONS FOR USE, AUDIENCE OBJECTIVES, AND CONCEPTS TO DISCUSS. (BAC)
