The San Antonio school district is among 10 in Texas that have their own police departments, with 72 uniformed officers who work within the schools and patrol the school grounds.
Abstract
At the start of each school year, the police officers hold an assembly, outlining the rules and procedures that will be enforced to keep their school safe, including periodic drug sweeps. Police officers also work individually with students as mentors, counselors, and teachers. The officers are fully armed, providing deterrence to criminal behavior. In addition, plainclothes gang-intervention officers interact regularly with gangs as part of the gang awareness and prevention program. The campus police also work closely with the county's juvenile probation department in mentoring students on probation. The police officers receive extensive screening and training. Parents and teachers strongly support the program, which was initiated partly due to concerns about drug abuse, and which emphasizes a personal approach rather than metal detectors and other security equipment.
