Abstract
EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT STRUCTURE, LISTENING, EMPATHY, ACCEPTANCE, AND MODELS. STRUCTURE REFERS TO THE NEED TO CLARIFY GOALS, LIMITS, AND EXPECTATIONS IN RELATIONSHIPS -- THE NEED TO KNOW WHERE ONE STANDS. LISTENING WITH EMPATHY IS A KEY TO EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISION. FOR CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL, EMPATHY OFTEN MEANS TAKING A RISK. ACCEPTANCE BETWEEN PEOPLE IS PARTICULARLY CRITICAL IN THE HUMAN SERVICE FIELD. MOST PEOPLE WHO HAVE PROBLEMS IN COPING, KEEPING THEMSELVES TOGETHER, MAKING CONTRIBUTIONS, ETC., DO NOT FULLY ACCEPT THEMSELVES. ACCEPTANCE MAY BE PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT FOR CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL, BUT IT IS ESSENTIAL. EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT ALSO REQUIRES THE MANAGER TO SERVE AS AN EFFECTIVE MODEL.
