Abstract
Issues under study by the Association of International Chiefs of Police are delineated: truck safety, drunk-driver education programs, raised vehicles (those elevated above factory specifications), and the use of highway emergency signs. Development of central booking-videotaping facilities in Pennsylvania is noted. Phases in the implementation of seat belt legislation and public reactions to them are discussed in terms of their implications for police, and statistics supporting the efficacy of seat belts in reducing highway injury and mortalities are provided. Factors affecting driver compliance with traffic control devices and their implications for highway engineers are discussed. Also examined are California's efforts in the areas of truck safety and the 55-mph national maximum speed limit. Speed and drunk driving enforcement, coupled with the seat belt law, are discussed as contributors to decreased traffic deaths in Texas; Chicago's motor vehicle pursuit policy is outlined. Finally, the Traffic Accident Analysis and Reconstruction System is discussed as a computerized aid to accident investigation. Photographs and tables.
