A nationwide survey to determine training needs related to field operations in State and local law enforcement agencies found that training priorities were similar across all agency sizes and types.
Abstract
Survey packets were mailed to 16,144 agencies during February 1983. Responses came from 7,294 agencies. Response rates were highest for the larger agencies, and the responding agencies represented 90 percent of all sworn State and local law enforcement officers. Fifty-four training activities represented 59.3 percent of all training areas given average or higher priorities. Thirty-seven additional areas were of high priority. All types of agencies rated handling personal stress as the highest priority. Budgetary constraints present an obstacle to the provision of adequate training for sworn officers in many agencies. Existing training methods should be examined. Developing curriculum modules may increase the efficiency of use of training resources.
