The number of mentally disordered offenders admitted to hospitals in England and Wales with restrictions on discharge under the 1959 and 1983 Mental Health Acts totaled 519 in 1990, about 85 percent higher than in 1980.
Abstract
There was a large increase in 1990 in the number of patients admitted on transfer from prison service establishments. The number of patients transferred from these establishments before sentence doubled between 1989 and 1990, from 98 to 180, while the number rose from 119 to 145 after sentence. Total discharges and disposals were 52 percent higher in 1990 than in 1980, but discharges into the community were 9 percent lower in 1990 than in 1980. The population detained in hospitals in 1990 rose to 1,964 patients; this figure was higher than in any of the previous 10 years. The proportion of the total population detained in special hospitals as opposed to other hospitals declined from 66 percent in 1980 to 60 percent in 1990. 16 notes, 12 tables, and 8 figures
