During the first quarter of 1992, 33 people were detained in Great Britain under the 1989 Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Abstract
Of these, 31 were in connection with Northern Irish terrorism, and two were in connection with international terrorism. Seven of those detained were either charged with an offense, deported, removed, or excluded. The other 26 were detained for fewer than 48 hours. In addition, 57 persons were interrogated for more than 1 hour but not detained. The law allows the police to arrest suspected terrorists and detain them for 48 hours on their own authority. They also have the power to conduct security checks on travelers entering or leaving Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the United Kingdom. Furthermore, persons involved in terrorism connected with the affairs of Northern Ireland may be excluded from Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the United Kingdom. Tables and notes
