This report summarizes the evaluation of a convenience store robbery information and prevention program patterned after an approach used successfully by Southland Corporation (7-Eleven stores) and implemented by the Crime Prevention Unit of the Vancouver City Police Department (Canada) from 1981-1984.

Abstract

The summary initially reviews the Robbery Improvement Program's (RIP) objectives, issues examined by the evaluation, and its methodology. While over 100 stores were exposed to RIP, less than 20 percent used robbery prevention kit items. Persons who had attended a RIP seminar did express greater awareness about what to do in the event of a robbery, and participants in RIP experienced a lower average loss per robbery incident compared to nonparticipants. The RIP also helped promote better relations between the business community. The evaluation identified certain environmental and store characteristics that made businesses vulnerable to robbery. Several of the final report's recommendations regarding policies, robbery prevention programs, and future research are detailed.
