The elderly are especially vulnerable to victimization due to their living arrangements, physical characteristics, economic needs, and social losses, as well as to societal attitudes and values.
Abstract
Included for discussion are the causes of crime against the elderly in the home and on the street by strangers, maltreatment of geriatric populations within institutional settings, and elder abuse by family, friends, and neighbors. Efforts for the prevention of the victimization of the elderly are described and are related to their dependency, isolation, and powerlessness. The need for cross-cultural research is stressed.
