ADAM Preliminary 2000 Findings on Drug Use

and Drug Markets ? Adult Male Arrestees

Washington, DC ? The National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the research and development agency of the Justice Department, has released ADAM Preliminary 2000 Findings on Drug Use and Drug Markets ? Adult Male Arrestees.? The report presents a broad range of data from NIJ?s Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM) program, including information on drug and alcohol use, drug market characteristics, drug treatment needs and mental health problems of adult male arrestees.? NIJ is a component of the Justice Department?s Office of Justice Programs (OJP).

In more than half of the 27 sites providing data, 65 percent or more of the arrestees had recently used cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, opiates, or phencyclidine (PCP).? In half the sites, 30 percent or more of the arrestees did not have a high school diploma.? In many sites, arrestees lived in a shelter or had no fixed address.? In half the sites, at least 14 percent of arrestees said their living situation was unstable in the month before they were interviewed.?

The ADAM program supports data collection on drug use and related topics in 35 sites across the country.? The data comes from interviews and urinalyses obtained voluntarily and recorded confidentially from arrestees at booking facilities.?

This report will be followed in early 2002 by the ADAM Annual Report for 2000.? It will contain information on adult males as well as information on juvenile and female arrestees.
