HEARING OF THE REVIEW PANEL ON PRISON RAPE

WASHINGTON – The Review Panel on Prison Rape will hold a hearing in Springfield, Mass., on September 24, 2008. The hearings will be based on the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) recent report, Sexual Victimization in Local Jails Reported by Inmates, 2007. The purpose of the hearing is to assist BJS in identifying common characteristics of victims and perpetrators of rape in county jails with the highest and lowest incidence of rape. Representatives from the Hampden County, Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Center, an identified facility with a low prevalence of sexual victimization, will testify on WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 AT 8:30 A.M. EDT. The hearing that was scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2008 regarding the New York City Rose M. Singer Center, a facility determined to have a high prevalence of sexual victimization, has been postponed.
