DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO HOST CONFERENCE ABOUT MASS CASUALTY VIOLENCE

           The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and its Office Victims of Crime (OVC) will host the 2009 Conference on Mass Casualty and Violence at Home and Abroad—OVC Assisting Victims of Crime on Monday, October 19, through Wednesday, October 21, 2009, in Arlington, VA. Experts will discuss collaborative responses to victims; coordinating victim services with investigation and prosecution; medical examiner issues; trauma and mental health considerations; special needs of victims with disabilities; working with the media; sources of compensation and assistance; and many other topics.            The Office of Justice Programs, headed by Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary Lou Leary, provides federal leadership in developing the nation's capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist victims. OJP has five component bureaus: the Bureau of Justice Assistance; the Bureau of Justice Statistics; the National Institute of Justice; the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention; and the Office for Victims of Crime. Additionally, OJP has two program offices: the Community Capacity Development Office, which incorporates the Weed and Seed strategy, and the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART).
