OJP's Bureau of Justice Statistics and FBI Announce New Crime Data Tool; BJS Releases Reports?Together, BJS and the FBI have launched an online data tool www.ucrdatatool.gov to make it easier to research and analyze the Uniform Crime Data (UCR). Previously, comparing UCR data required searching the annual reports and then manually crunching the numbers. The ucrdatatool.gov will replace the BJS long-standing data online tool that presented crime trends from the FBI?s UCR. More information about the methodology and best practices for using the new tool is available at www.ucrdatatool.gov.

BJS also released two reports this week. The Local Police Departments, 2007, presents data collected from a representative sample of local police departments nationwide on a variety of agency characteristics. Based on the 2007 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey, the report provides national estimates on staffing levels, operating costs, race and gender of officers, officer salaries and special pay, screening methods used in the officer selection process, and training requirements for new officer recruits. The Capital Punishment, 2009 - Statistical Tables, present characteristics of persons under sentence of death on Dec. 31, 2009, and persons executed in 2009.
