LOUIS HARRIS SURVEY OF CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL'S ATTITUDES TOWARD THEIR JOBS, CO-WORKERS, AND AGENCIES, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND THEIR OWN PREPARATORY TRAINING.
Abstract
THE FINDINGS INDICATED THAT CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL GENERALLY FEEL A HIGH LEVEL OF SATISFACTION WITH THEIR JOBS, SUPERVISORS, AND AGENCIES. A MAJORITY OF CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL SAW THE TOTAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AS 'SOMEWHAT EFFECTIVE'. ALMOST TWO OUT OF THREE FELT THEIR TRAINING HAD BEEN HELPFUL PREPARATION, BUT THERE WAS A CLEAR GAP BETWEEN DEGREE AREAS AND THOSE AREAS WHICH WOULD BE MOST USEFUL FOR CORRECTIONS. THE SURVEY INDICATED THAT A MAJORITY OF THE WORKERS THOUGHT THAT THE COMMUNITY SHOULD BE MORE INVOLVED IN CORRECTIONS AND A PLURALITY SUPPORTED THE INCREASED USE OF PAROLE AND PROBATION.
