ANALYSIS OF AN EIGHT YEAR HISTORY OF SUBWAY ROBBERIES IN NEW YORK CITY, WITH REGARD TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICE DEPLOYMENT AND CRIME RATES.
Abstract
THE DEPLOYMENT PRACTICES OF THE TRANSIT AUTHORITY POLICE DEPARTMENT (A SEPARATE POLICE FORCE WITH JURISDICTION OVER THE NEW YORK CITY SUBWAYS) ARE EXAMINED. ROBBERY INCIDENCE PATTERNS ARE REVIEWED ALONG WITH CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCH CRIMES AND THE MEN WHO COMMIT THEM. BY COMPARING THESE PATTERNS WITH OTHER CRIME RATES AND WITH THE DEPLOYMENT, ACTIVITIES, AND ARREST RATES OF THE TRANSIT POLICE, MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO CHANGES IN ROBBERY RATES ARE IDENTIFIED. POSSIBILITIES FOR IMPROVED DEPLOYMENT OF THE SUBWAY POLICE IN NEW YORK ARE SUGGESTED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
