STATISTICAL RESEARCH ON ROBBERY RATES RELATING FACTORS SUCH AS VICTIM AND OFFENDER TYPES, MEANS OF ATTACK, AND ADJUDICATION.
Abstract
DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM 1722 ROBBERY CASES THAT OCCURRED IN PHILADELPHIA, PA., BETWEEN 1960 AND 1966. CORRELATION WAS INVESTIGATED FOR THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES - DEGREES OF SERIOUSNESS AND INJURY, INCIDENCE OF DETECTION, RACE, SEX, AND AGE DIFFERENCES OF THE VICTIMS AS WELL AS OF THE OFFENDERS, MEANS OF ATTACK, TEMPORAL, SPATIAL, AND ECOLOGICAL PATTERNS, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PRESENCE OF ALCOHOL AND ROBBERY, PREVIOUS CRIMINAL RECORDS, AND ADJUDICATION. THE RESULTS OF THIS SURVEY ARE COMPARED WITH STATISTICS FROM THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS. IN ADDITION TO REPORTING STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT CORRELATIONS AMONG OFFENSE VARIABLES, THE AUTHOR ESTABLISHES A CLEAR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROBBERY AND OTHER CRIMES OF VIOLENCE ON THE BASIS OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF VICTIMS, OFFENDERS, AND MODUS OPERANDI OF THE OFFENSES. ROBBERY BEHAVIORS PARALLELED THOSE IN CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY.
