This progress report describes the activities of the Jackson Community Crime Prevention program (JCCP) (Mississippi) from April through June 1981, including juvenile crime prevention and education projects.
Abstract
Because of rapid population growth in the city and consequent crime increases, the police have requested that the 2-year crime prevention grant be extended through April 1982. After discussing staffing problems, this report highlights the quarter's accomplishments. Alarm specialists continued to recommend placements for alarms in business facilities. Because juvenile crime remains a major concern, the JCCP cooperated with volunteers and city officials to establish the Jackson Police Athletic Club and initiated a Youth Against Crime project involving adolescents from a predominantly black, low-income, high-crime area. A restitution program is also being planned in conjunction with concerned citizens and local business owners. Educational activities included televising an Operation Identification commercial and sending a mobile classroom with crime prevention materials to block meetings and other community gatherings. The JCCP continues to receive requests for crime prevention assistance and maintains contacts with established block associations. The JCCP has worked with the city's redevelopment authority to offer crime prevention education to residents of housing rehabilitation projects. Business and church burglaries have increased, and prevention programs in these areas will be given high priority in the next quarter. The JCCP conducted many residential, business, and public school security surveys and continued its award program for homes complying with certain security standards. Miscellaneous prevention projects focused on crimes against the elderly, vandalism, and shoplifting. JCCP achievements are described in detail under 19 task categories.
