Abstract
Highlights from the 2014 KIDS COUNT Data book on national trends in child well-being include the following: children experienced gains in the education and health domains but setbacks in the economic well-being and family and community domains; three of the four economic indicators got worse, revealing that children and families had not recovered from the deep recession; all four education indicators showed steady improvement; all four health indicators also showed improvement; and trends in family and community domains were mixed, with the number of children living in poverty and the number of children living in single-parent homes continuing to increase. This publication is the 25th edition of the KIDS COUNT Data Book. The data book, published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, tracks the well-being of children nationally and in every State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands in order to raise public awareness and build public commitment to invest in solutions aimed at ensuring all children have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. Data for this publication were obtained from a variety of sources including the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey; the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Educational Progress and Common Core of Data; and KIDS COUNT projects in every State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
