This fiscal year 2003-2004 Annual Report of the Maryland Judiciary is a statistical compilation of the courts' work during the year.
Abstract
A section on judicial revenues and expenditures reports that the total amount expended to support the operations of the judicial branch was approximately $371 million. Revenues and expenditures are reported for each component of the judicial branch for fiscal years 2002, 2003, and 2004. Data for the Court of Appeals, the highest tribunal in the State, encompass filings, dispositions, and pending cases. Data are also provided on the composition and activities of the Court of Special Appeals, the State's intermediate appellate court established in 1966 to relieve the rapidly increasing caseload of the Court of Appeals. The circuit courts are the highest common-law and equity courts of record having original jurisdiction within the State. Data for the circuit courts address filings, terminations, and trials/hearings. The District Court of Maryland is a statewide court with 34 locations. Its jurisdiction includes all landlord-tenant cases, civil claims for amounts up to $25,000, motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors, certain felonies, and peace and protective orders. Data and information are presented on the court's work in each of these areas. The section of the report that pertains to judicial administration presents information and data on the various departments and agencies responsible for various aspects of court management. Another section focuses on court-related agencies, namely, the Attorney Grievance Commission, the Client Protection Fund, the State Board of Law Examiners, the State Law Library, the Commission on Judicial Disabilities, the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office, and the Rules Committee.
