This paper examines the complexity in the New South Wales (NSW), specifically the improvement of police-youth relatives.
Abstract
Due to the diversity of sites and situations in which police and youth interact; the task of policing youth in New South Wales (NSW) is very complex. This paper draws together current information about the policing of youth in NSW dealing specifically with the following issues: (1) the complexity and depth of police-youth relations; (2) public perceptions of juvenile crime and the relationship between the perceptions and the policing of youth; (3) the relationship between different evaluative paradigms in assessing the quality of police-youth relations in reference to the Crimes Legislation Amendment Act 1998; (4) substantial developments associated with the proclamation of the Young Offenders Act 1997; and (5) the extent of other initiatives of the NSW Police Services to promote better police-youth relations. The paper attempts to reveal both the complexity of policing youth and the progress that has been made by the NSW Police Services to improve police-youth relations.
