This handbook provides guidance to Texas educators on dealing with crime and discipline in the State's public schools.
Abstract
The guidebook is intended for use by school officials and administrators to deal with school crime and discipline issues according to the rules set forth in the Texas Education Code. The information in the guidebook is presented in five main sections. Section 1, Roles and Responsibilities of School Officials, covers topics such as parental notification, confidentiality of records, duties and liabilities of principals, and the role of school attendance officers and peace officers. Section 2, Laws That Pertain to Disciplinary Punishment, covers topics such as failure to attend school, legal parameters of school discipline, alternative educational settings, and different forms of school discipline. Section 3, Laws That Pertain to Crimes in Schools, covers topics such as reporting crimes in school, parental liability, and contraband. Section 4, Guidelines for Conducting Searches in School, covers topics such as what is considered a legal search, what are the consequences for conducting an illegal search, and what types of searches are allowed. Section 5, Taking Students into Custody, covers topics such as what are the grounds for taking a student into custody, what is delinquent conduct, and what are the various notification requirements. 384 endnotes
