This fourth Quarterly Newsletter (April-June 2015) of the first year of the U.S. Justice Department's launching of the Violence Reduction Network (VRN) provides a descriptive and statistical review of VRN activities generally and specifically in the five sites that compose the VRN (Camden, NJ; Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; Oakland/Richmond, CA; and Wilmington, DE).
Abstract
This newsletter focuses on progress in meeting VRN's goal of marshaling the combined resources of the U.S. Justice Department's (DOJ's) agencies and offices to counter violence and its root causes based on a comprehensive approach. Under the VRN model, DOJ has altered the way it supports local agencies by improving its training and technical assistance (TTA) protocols so it can be a more proactive partner in the development of a city's capacity to reduce violent crime. The VRN model does not purport to be a violent-crime strategy. Rather, it is designed to improve participating site's current crime-reduction goals, building on efforts already in operation, leveraging lessons learned, and delivering a broad spectrum of resources under a strategic and comprehensive approach. In September, VRN welcomed five new sites to the five inaugural sites. The lessons learned from the first year of work with the first five sites will be applied in the five new sites. After reporting on this VRN expansion, the newsletter reviews the 2015 VRN Summit, followed by highlight reports for each of the five inaugural sites. The "Spotlight" section of the newsletter, which focuses on federal law enforcement resources, profiles the FBI DIVRT/DEA financial operations and the DOJ's Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA's) National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) and the Office of Justice Program's (OJP's) Diagnostic Center. Statistics cover the VRN resources provided to date.
