Currently, forensic DNA profiling is focused on the identification of the donor of biological evidence retrieved from crime scenes.
Identification of the donor is largely dependent on obtaining an informative DNA profile in conjunction with a match to a database or a reference profile.
In cases where a match is not achieved, the use of the biological evidence in the investigation ceases in most laboratories.
