Victimization At and Away From School Among Students Ages 12 to 18, 2014–2024 – Statistical Tables

This report details rates of theft and nonfatal violent victimization at and away from school for students ages 12 to 18 from 2014 through 2024. It also presents victimization rates for students by location of victimization, type of crime, age, and sex, among other demographic characteristics. Findings are based on BJS's National Crime Victimization Survey, a self-report survey administered each year from January 1 to December 31, which serves as the nation’s primary source of data on criminal victimization.

Highlights:

• The total victimization rate at school in 2024 (27.0 victimizations per 1,000 students ages 12 to 18) did not differ significantly from the rate in 2014.
• The theft victimization rate at school in 2024 was higher for students ages 12 to 14 (7.5 per 1,000) than for students ages 15 to 18 (3.0 per 1,000).
• There were no statistically significant differences between male and female students in the rates of victimization at school across all types of crime in 2024.
• The total victimization rate at school in 2024 was higher for students from households that made less than $25,000 per year (60.3 per 1,000) than those whose households made between $25,000 and $49,999 (26.7 per 1,000).
