This issue of AMBER Advocate presents several articles from Federal, State, local, and foreign government and nongovernmental agencies and organizations on child abduction initiatives and innovations under the AMBER Alert program.
Abstract
The first article discusses how break-out sessions of the National Symposium on Sex Offender Management and Accountability discussed ways sex offender registries can be incorporated into AMBER Alert plans. The second article examines child safety through new airport safety innovations; where the Nation’s 43,000 airport security screeners are now getting AMBER Alerts and photos of abducted children. The third article presents a brief profile of Bob Fisher, current Chief Executive Officer of the Nevada Broadcasters Association and his goals of promoting child safety through public awareness and legislation. Innovative ideas offered by participants attending the 2006 Broadcast Warning Summit in Boise, Idaho on educating the public and others about AMBER Alerts are presented in the fourth article. The fifth article presents suggestions and ideas resulting from the first Atlantic AMBER Alert Meeting held in Canada in 2007. One suggestion was having a joint Child Abduction Response Team (CART) training for Canadians and Americans who border the States and provinces developing a comprehensive child recovery plan to improve the likelihood of the safe recovery of a child in crisis. In the sixth article, key issues are identified by the family members of victims and survivors that include: parents as suspects, first responders, CART and new laws, and communication. The final article discusses the effectiveness of the AMBER Alert through the miracle of locating a 13-year old boy abducted and missing in Missouri. The issue concludes with important information on upcoming events and resources regarding the AMBER Alert program.
