Annotation

This report presents statistics and explanations of 26 indicators of the well-being of children; the indicators cover economic security, health, behavior and the social setting, education, and child abuse and neglect.

Abstract

The data came from a variety of Federal reports and records. Most statistics are for 1995. The results revealed that 20 percent of children lived in poverty in 1995, 3 percent of children lived in households that reported that sometimes or often the household does not have enough to eat, 86 percent of children were covered by health insurance in 1995, and 79 percent of children in 1994 were in very good or excellent health. In addition, 8 percent of children ages 5-17 had some limitation in activity from chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes, 22 percent of 12th graders reported smoking cigarettes daily, 47 percent of children ages 3 to 4 were enrolled in nursery school, and 85 percent of youth ages 18-24 had completed high school. In 1993, the reported rate of child abuse and neglect involved 23.1 per 1,000 children under age 18. Figures and tables
