This article compares drug use among females arrestees charged with prostitution with that of female arrestees who were not charged with prostitution.
Abstract
A comparison of drug use among female arrestees is the focus of this article. Asserting that few studies have compared drug use among females arrested for prostitution with drug use among females arrested for non-prostituting offenses, the authors conducted a comparative study through the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM) program. Utilizing self-reporting and urine tests, the study obtained data from 3,587 female arrestees, arrested in Houston, Texas, from 1990 to 1998. Of the 3,587 arrestees, 182, or 5 percent had been charged with prostitution. After presenting demographic characteristics of the entire sample, the article provides logistic regression analysis and chi square statistics in order to demonstrate that cocaine use is significantly higher in the females arrested for prostitution than it is in those who were arrested for other offenses.
