This is the final report on the NIJ-sponsored "DNA Backlog Reduction Program FY 2001" of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's (GBI's) Division of Forensic Laboratory.
During the grant period (September 1, 2001, to August 31, 2003), a total of 48,446 convicted offenders DNA samples were typed, and the resulting data were entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Approximately 20,100 of these samples were analyzed using grant funds. The processing of the remaining samples was funded by the State. In addition, during the same period, 586 DNA samples were processed for cases in which the identity of the person who left the DNA at a crime scene was unknown ("no-suspect" cases). The GBI crime laboratory has a policy of analyzing all "no-suspect" sexual assault kit that is submitted to the lab. In addition to sample analysis, 307 CODIS matches were made during the 2-years of the grant. Tables summarize CODIS activity from sample analyses during the grant period from January 1, 2003, to June 3, 2003.
